Hall, R. Vance, & Hall, M. (Eds.). How to Manage Behavior series. Austin, TX: Pro-Ed. Parents are often interested in information of a "how to" nature, such as "how do I use systematic attention?" Obviously, changing behavior involves knowing how to use correctly the specific procedures that will be employed. However, the first and quite important step in helping children learn and behave better is deciding what one's goals are, making sure these are appropriate, and deciding which procedures are most applicable in the home setting. The How to Manage Behavior series edited by R. Vance Hall and Marilyn Hall addresses these fundamental issues of good planning in the text by Axelrod and Hall called Behavior Modification: Basic Principles. Many of the remaining 15 texts on specifics such as using attention, using time out, selecting reinforcers, and so forth mention these prerequisite activities, but often briefly. Our advice is that parents do not jump into the water with one of the "how to" books, but read the general text first. This will help parents plan a program that is both wise and technically correct. All books are available from pro-ed.
