Coercion and Its Fallout - ePUB Format Coercion and Its Fallout, Revised Edition By Murray Sidman Do you use Coercion? No? When you have finished this book, you are going to be very surprised; you are going to know some things about yourself that you never knew before. We use coercion almost exclusively to control each other; many find it hard to imagine any other way. The author asks, Does the death penalty deter potential murderers? Is harsh retaliation the answer to the discipline problem in our schools? Do the standard coercive practices work? - in law enforcement, behavior therapy, education, the family, business, the armed forces, diplomacy. Behavior analysis has shown that they do not work. Coercion is in the long run self-defeating. Punishment eventually proves counterproductive. Sidman presents a rational discussion of matters in which emotions usually run strong. He proposes that what we have learned in the laboratory can provide guides both for personal conduct and public policy.Language: English ISBN-13: 978-1-881317-17-3 Publish Date: 1989 EFormat: 2013 Publisher: Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies Format: ePub or .mobi (Kindle) You will be asked which format is preferred upon fulfillment through email. Verplanck Glossary/Thesauruswith Psychology on a Disk andSociology on a DiskCD-ROM Verplanck Glossary/Thesaurus with Psychology on a Disk and Sociology on a Disk (CD-ROM) The first published version of William S. Verplanck's Glossary/Thesaurus project appeared in a 1957 supplement to the Psychological Review: A glossary of some terms used in the Objective Science of Behavior, Volume 64, #6, Part II. Verplanck has since increased the size of his glossary to well beyond 3,000 terms, and an expandable web version is under development by Verplanck and an editorial committee in cooperation with the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies (www.behavior.org) and the Archives of the History of American Psychology, University of Akron (www.uakron.edu/ahap/). The fully developed version will allow the addition of new terms, commentary on existing terms, and the linking of terms to those in other glossaries. In the interim, CMS Software is privileged to make available both the 1957 and the 2000 versions of the Verplanck Glossary/Thesaurus, in rich text format, as a component of its CD-ROM edition of Psychology on a Disk and Sociology on a Disk. The glossary is searchable by term or by thesaurus index number. Both scholars and students will find Verplanck's definitions and commentaries on a broad range of terms in the behavioral sciences not only scholarly and informative but also incisive and witty. As it stands, the Glossary organizes virtually the entire field of psychology from a behavioral perspective. It will continue to grow once it is in place on the web. Meanwhile, here is the current version, conveniently accessible on a single CD-ROM disk. ISBN 0-922077-30-4Published by CMS Academic Software (2000) |

Sale - 50% reduction!A New Learning Environment A New Learning Environmentby Harold L. Cohen & James Filipczak From the Foreword:A New Learning Environment describes a different kind of social environment in a training school. It reports an experiment in 'contingency management' under which students were given positive reasons for behaving well with respect to each other and for studying and learning. It was not easy to construct such an environment. Indeed the practical problems were often staggering. But solutions were found, in part with the help of the art which springs from a humane concern for people and in part through the application of a technology derived from a science of behavior. The result- the CASE project at the National Training School for Boys - may well take its place as a landmark in penal reform. B. F. Skinner From the Authors' Preface:By including the systems and programs used throughout the project, with specific examples, we hope to encourage the reader to examine his own existing educational system in the light of specified behavioral objectives and measurement. We are convinced that the motivationally oriented environment would be of value not only to rehabilitation institutions (penal and mental) but also to the educational and psychological professions. Strong indications that the principles employed in CASE II could be effective in the public school system are found in the increases by as much as four grade levels - in academic skills as measured by nationally standardized tests, in positive attitudinal changes in the students, and in IQ as much as 27 points. Continuously Programmed Environmentsand the Experimental Analysis of Human Behavior Continuously Programmed Environments and the Experimental Analysis of Human Behaviorby J. Brady Continuously programmed environments represent an approach to the study of complete repertoires of human behavior by combining the conceptual framework of experimental analysis with the naturalistic goals of ethological observation. There are many areas of application of behavior analysis that could benefit greatly from research in a programmed environment. For example, the conditions of an employment situation can be simulated in a programmed environment for research on management and performance maintenance (NASA has been interested in simulating working conditions under extended confinement and isolation). Also, drug self-administration and feeding behavior have been studied over extended periods in a programmed environment. No reader interested in complex human behavior is likely to come away from reading this monograph without a sense of excitement about the avenues of experimental exploration made possible by continuously programmed environments. Brady's work evokes innovative responses from others, as is evident in the breadth of the topics considered by commentators Morris, Logue, and Branch. ISBN 1-881317-00-5 (1992) 68 p. |
